Jane M. Wathuta

Dr. Jane Wathuta has an LL.B degree from the University of Nairobi (1997) and is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.  She holds a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family from the University of Navarre (Pamplona, Spain) and a PhD in Bioethics from the Biomedical University of Rome in Italy.  Her doctoral thesis consisted of a human rights and ethical evaluation of HIV prevention strategies in Sub-Saharan Africa.  She has presented conference papers; among the more recent ones were at Strathmore University’s Annual Law Conference held in July 2014, and the UNESCO World Conference on Bioethics, Medical Ethics & Health Law (Naples, 2013).  Jane has worked for a number of years with the Kianda Foundation Educational Trust and is also a co-initiator of “Feminine Genius”, a program that seeks to foster authentic integral personal development in the modern professional Kenyan woman.  

 

Her international experience includes an internship period, in 2013, at the Delegation of Caritas Internationalis to the United Nations in Geneva during which she attended several high-level events organized by the Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).  She gained experience related to networking and advocacy at the level of multi-lateral organizations.  Jane also holds a certificate from the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) Venice School of Human Rights on the theme “Human Rights as our Responsibility”.  She is a Calihan Fellow and a member of the Law Society of Kenya.  She has also participated in and coordinated a number of international work camps for university students.  Jane speaks several foreign languages and has worked as a part-time Spanish translator for SOS-Kinderdorf.  She enjoys reading, languages, swimming, hiking, cycling and travelling.  She is currently serving as a lecturer at Strathmore Law School and has also recently been awarded a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
