Strathmore Law School 1st Year Students Victors in AKMCC Moot Court Competition

Roy Kitur, Cindy Wakio and Alexander Otuka with Allan Munyao

For the three Strathmore Law school first year students, Roy Kitur, Cindy Wakio and Alexander Otuka winning the 3rd edition All- Kenyan Moot Court Competition (AKMCC), was a great achievement and inspiration. Unseating the two-time winners of the previous moot court competitions, Kenyatta University, their first try out in the competition since its inception was simply historic. The three were under the coaching of Allan Munyao and Emmah Waboke.

This year’s AKMCC competitions were held at Kenyatta University under a general theme, “The Place of Refugee Rights In The Face Of National Security Threats.” This budding & highly rated competition was geared towards building and underscoring the pivotal role of scholarly research, seasoned analytical and advocacy skills, as well as the development of aplomb in making public presentations; an invaluable investment for all in the legal profession.

After a rigorous preparation period since December of last year, the hardworking team beat the 10 law school universities represented. In the final rounds the team beat Catholic University in the preliminary and quarter-finals round, and Moi University in the semi-finals round. Presiding over the final round was Justice Alnasir Visram- Judge Court of Appeal of Kenya. He commended the Strathmore Law School mooters stating that he was impressed with the quality of the mooters and is sure that law school students from the university have a bright future in the legal career in Kenya.

The winning team won internship positions in various national and international organizations. Adding to their group win, Cindy Wakio won the best female speaker award and Alexander Otuka won the best research paper award and earned the privilege of having his paper published in the next Kenya Law edition.

The Competition is set to become one of the largest annual events in the Kenyan legal calendar.

Congratulations to the winning team.
