About Us

At the core of the Student Civic Initiative (SCI) is a commitment to fostering civic responsibility among university students by turning their theoretical knowledge into practical actions that significantly benefit the common good. This initiative, led by these students, focuses on renovating underprivileged public primary schools, enhancing educational outcomes, and restoring local ecosystems through environmental projects in rural Kenya. Our mission is to diminish the inequality that hampers educational access and community development, thereby positively impacting individual lives and the broader community.

SCI not only equips university students with essential life skills that broaden their professional perspectives but also deepens their sense of community involvement. This practical application of their academic learning, aligned with the values upheld by Strathmore University, encourages students to act responsibly and respectfully, recognizing their privileged positions and their duty to contribute positively to society. Our initiative empowers them to address critical social and environmental issues, fostering a culture of solidarity and hope. This engagement not only prepares them for future leadership roles but also inspires primary school pupils to strive for better opportunities, motivating them to be diligent and conscientious citizens. Join us in creating a transformative impact where it’s most needed.

Our Programs

Volunteer to Teach

The Civic Initiative provides a unique platform for university students to support pupil learning by offering extra tuition in specific subjects. This initiative goes beyond academic expertise; it's about leading by example and extending opportunities to those less privileged. Through this program, university students help pupils enhance their prospects of advancing to reputable secondary schools.

Volunteer to Renovate Classes

The Civic Initiative is determined to improve the quality of the learning premises for pupils in marginalized areas. One of the most rewarding projects is volunteering to restore the classrooms. It is hard work but we believe in the power of education and understand the importance of improving the learning environment for the teachers and the learners.

Volunteer to Plant Trees

The Civic Initiative is dedicated to contributing to the restoration and conservation of indigenous ecosystems that have degraded over time. This effort involves university students planting trees, with school pupils taking on the responsibility of nurturing them throughout their school years. We are committed to the belief that we can restore indigenous ecosystems, one tree at a time.

Our Impact

Our Work

We are passionate about contributing to better learning outcomes for primary school pupils in rural areas of Kenya. That is the reason why we have a holistic approach, which consists of working with the teaching staff, refurbishing the physical facilities, mentoring the pupils and restoring the environment around the school.

Refurbishing School Facilities

The Civic Initiative is committed to improving the quality of educational facilities for pupils in marginalized areas. This challenging endeavor is driven by our belief in the transformative power of education and the critical importance of creating better learning environments for both teachers and students.

Learning Support

The Civic Initiative provides a unique opportunity for university students to enhance pupils' learning by offering extra tuition in specific subjects. Students also assist teachers by renewing and updating teaching materials, such as charts and maps, and providing essential learning resources to students who cannot afford them. This program enables meaningful support where it's most needed.

Feeding Plan

While the Civic Initiative is currently unable to implement a feeding plan, there are intentions to provide pupils with basic meals from Monday to Friday each term. The primary goal of this project is to improve pupil health by ensuring access to clean water and a minimal diet, which are crucial in preventing various childhood illnesses. This planned initiative is aimed at enhancing the overall well-being of the pupils.

Tree Planting

The Civic Initiative is dedicated to fostering environmental conservation by planting trees around primary schools. This effort involves university students who plant the trees, with the school pupils taking responsibility for their care throughout their schooling. This collaborative approach aims to restore local ecosystems that have degraded over time, building a culture of environmental stewardship among students.

Hygiene & Sanitation

Despite limited resources, the Civic Initiative is committed to ensuring that all pupils have access to clean water and sanitation facilities. By humanizing their learning environment and improving basic amenities, we aim to not only enhance their health but also positively impact their academic performance. This effort underscores our dedication to creating a better learning and living environment for pupils.

REVELANT, IMPORTANT UPDATES

In eleven months, student funds have transformed Enengeetia Primary School, Mau, Narok. We’ve refurbished seven classrooms, provided extra tuition, introduced new CBC-compliant graphic learning materials, and planted trees.
